Pretty in Pink

For some reason my two favorites pics didn't make it to my last post. I have to say a special thank you to my sister who made the most gorgeous pink cake. Another big thank you to her husband Neil who made the beautiful wooden cake pedestal!

Harlow's Third Birthday

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Three years ago today, Harlow Mae Sweazy made her debut on the planet.

Two days ago we had a party for her, attended only by her grandparents who were kind enough to brave whatever virus had turned her into a lymph node-swollen fever-breathing dragon.

At this point I would be less surprised if she sprouted wings, sported claws, and flew around our apartment melting princess dolls with her fire breath. She has had so many fevers in the past 6 months that I am just going to take the average, clock her at a normal body temperature of 100.2 and occasionally check for cinders on her pillow. I know with the confinement of winter and attending a new school brings on the illness, but I would be lying if I didn't feel a little flabbergasted everytime (every week?) she starts her slow burn. She IS an Aries, afterall, but I nursed for 15 months dammit and all my kid got were these lousy viruses. Wasn't that supposed to endow her with superhero immuno superiority?

But I digress.

We stuck with her requested "pink" "cute" theme, so she was lavished with Hello Kitty and Disney princess dolls and dresses and pounds of pink jellybeans and lollypops and enough sweetness to make a girl question her feminist loyalties. But Harlow managed to rally and enjoy herself.

Today my feverish three year old baby girl and I are spending the day in our pjs, watching Winnie the Pooh and maybe sneaking a little more of that pink candy.

We are most definitely not talking about the Dragon movie we saw at the theater yesterday, the one where we left after the first 15 minutes. She may be a little Dragonbaby but she most definitely doesn't like them all up in her grill, 3D like. Mama gets a special prize for that parenting decision.

Happy birthday baby girl. Thanks for keeping me warm in my heart...and in our chilly apartment.

I'm here! Kinda!

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Well, hi you!

My goodness, it's been awhile.

9 days, 4 babies, a photo workshop and beaucoup de LA freeway miles driven.

When we got home, family was in town for my man's birthday.

Which means preparation is underway for Miss Harlow's big 3 birthday.

Don't even ask about the pile of dishes on the sink.

I have trip photos to post, babies to blog, editing to finish and some catching up to central standard time on the to-do list.

I will be back Monday with photos, news, and a 3 - 3! - year old daughter.

Gone fishin (and eating and shopping and hiking)

Good morning!

The Sweazys are back in LA this week for spring break, so posting will be light. We're too busy worshipping the sunshine to do little else.

Andrew & Lindsey

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Yesterday was another tease of lovely spring weather, and it coincided perfectly with Andrew and Lindsey's engagement shoot. They were running a little bit behind due to Lindsey's brand new big girl purchase - a vintage Caddy. I think we're gonna have to swing another shoot just so we can play with the new car! We're going to miss this creative duo when they leave Memphis for hillier climes (he's a musician; she's an artist), but I'm glad I got to spend at least one day hanging out with them downtown.

Eeeeeek! I had to post one more.

G is for Gorgeous

Gee how I love Jessica Hische's illustrated drop caps.

Let's Go Fly a Kite

Monday, March 8, 2010

All I have to say is thank the Powers that Be for the sunshine, because one more day of moody, chilly winter and I'd be coming at you like a rabid badger. I get a bit testy around certain days of the month, as ladies are wont to do, so the sunshine has gone a long to improve the overall mood.

To celebrate the gorgeous day and Harlow's first full Monday at her new school (more on that later), we surprised Miss Thing with a kite and picnic lunch and took it over to the river park to play. Caleb did most of the kite flying while Harlow demanded that I perform for fruit (seriously - WOULD NOT hand over the strawberries until I blew bubbles to her liking).

Pretty fab for a Monday.

I drove down to Tupelo this Saturday, reveling in the warmer air, sunshine, and the promise of catching up with a friend from college and new mama to 18 week old Lila.

Or Tyra.

Jury is out on who is more fierce.

I think to appease my ovaries, I'm gonna have to share some more. So here's a little sampler of Miss Thing.

The Makeshift Revolution

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

My multi-talented, multi-hypenated friend Mary Allison Cates has started a revolution.

The Makeshift Revolution.

Frustrated by the lack of realistic, modern-day mama role models, she launched a website that profiles mamas trying to get by. Mamas working or mamas staying at home or some trying to do both (when, let's face it) we're all trying to do everything.

I am honored to be the first mama profiled, especially (or maybe in spite of the fact) I don't bring any perfect solutions to the table. We're just trying to cobble a system together as we go, and I'm looking forward to seeing how other mamas get through their days.
