the glamorous life

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Hi there.

I'm hoping it's safe to come out. The majority of my days are made up of me napping or puking or trying not to puke while my dog follows me around my apartment, and that doesn't exactly make for exciting posts.

But what is exciting is the dreaming I'm doing - when not napping or puking - of our new house and the things that will go inside it. I have carried on a long term, one sided, ill-advised love affair with this couch, but as it turns out, we need things like air conditioning and plumbing, so I am afraid, ma petite sofa, I will have to let you go.

Moving on.

How about this stunner instead?

TGIF?

How's your Friday? I'd like a redo, please.

After weeks of feeling merp-y, I finally realized the culprit was my prenatal vitamin pack. Happily on Flintstone vitamins, I thought I would take my DHA pill, you know, the stuff with omega-3, brain building fishy-goodness? I made myself a pilates appointment, strolled over to the studio, and promptly threw up all the Omega-3 power in the bathroom.

To rally my spirits, I walked off the nausea at Bojos, my favorite antique/junk shop, and was surprised when Caleb called only a few blocks away. We met up for an impromptu tile date, looked at some doors, stopped over at Lit on Summer to see if they had any metal cabinets, and then ended up in a ridiculous car accident.

Just minding our own business in the driveway, we were waiting for a chance to turn into traffic when a car that had slowed to turn into the parking lot was struck by another. The car that was hit careened into us, crumpling the front driver's side and smooshing us into a pole. Turns out the woman who was responsible had just come from a medical procedure and was, to put it mildly, not in a state to be driving. I'm just grateful no one was hurt. As a consolation prize, I've got my mom's minivan for the time being, so I'll be test driving the mama mobile, a good 10 miles under the speed limit.

I hope YOU have an excellent weekend.

Sarah & Emmett

Thursday, August 26, 2010

My friend Sarah was in town for a few weeks recently, indulging in some grandmama love when not following her husband's band Rooney while they were playing the South. Lucky for me I got lots of Sarah and Emmett time.

And are you kidding me with this kid? Do you not just want to eat him up? I'll take her sexy mama goddess hair while we're at it!

Seriously. This is what seven weeks looks like during Baby II: The Revenge. It's only gonna get uglier from here.

The cottage: an update

Saturday, August 21, 2010

We are suddenly moving full force on this sucker. There are stud walls inside where actually ROOMS will be. There is a poured concrete porch where there will soon be chairs and ceiling fans and iced tea. I will have my own closet (!) thanks to my genius husband. The kiddo will have her own bathroom with an actual bathtub. I have no idea if she'll even know what to do if she's not bathing in a blue plastic bucket intended for beer! If we keep up at this pace, we should be moved in by the holidays if not sooner.

All I'm saying is that we will be in by next April as I don't planning on bringing a newborn home to a concrete loft.

I'm terrible at keeping secrets :)

Sweet!

Friday, August 20, 2010

I got the sweetest little birthday happy in the mail yesterday from my friend Susan. Thanks, Susan! It's the perfect antidote to an (uurp) icky, dry heaving Friday morning.

Hope you all have a sweet weekend!

Critsey Rowe

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

I normally find the very idea of posing guides for photographers silly, but when I stumbled across boudoir photographer Critsey Rowe's latest release, I had to pick up a copy.

It's kinda fantastic, right?

Critsey Rowe

Not only is it entertaining (ha! it's BARBIE!) and kinda of disturbingly hot (hey...it's BARBIE) but it offers really fantastic poses for the would be client as well as the photographer.

You can pick up your copy here.

School Daze

Friday, August 13, 2010

One of my favorite commercials was a back to school spot for Staples. I didn't even have a kid at the time, but I could sympathize.

Now I wish I could star in my own spot. I'd have my ballet slippers, a tutu, and I would pirouette across that motherf-er while my kid sobbed on the tile floor.

Well, that's not entirely accurate. She's actually just as pumped about school as I am. Constant triple digit temps, a full work load and no childcare has left both of us raw, angry, and ready to start pulling hair and screeching. When we're not loving and kissing on each other, because parenthood should be listed as an official psychiatric disorder in the DSM-IV.

But today was a new day. She had a half day back to ease her back into routine, and I can see my sanity rounding the bend. (I'd also like to emphasize here that the kiddo has been a frickin SAINT while I have been working my tail off to finish some deadlines. To further complicate things, Caleb started a new job, and coincidentally, so did I, but I can't talk about it yet. When I get more details and an all clear, I'll be trumpeting it from the roof!)

But as I dressed to take Harlow to school, I realized that while I was looking forward to her seeing all her friends, I was looking forward to seeing MY friends. I stopped in the adjacent coffee shop, and suddenly it was a happy homecoming, friends hugging and swapping vacation stories and stopping to praise God that school was back in session. Not only have I missed routine, I've missed contact with the people who keep me grounded and thankful.

So thank you, school. Thank you for taking care of my kiddo so I can take care of business and my mental health. And thanks for giving me such a fun group of parents to play with. Maybe next summer we can all just go somewhere cool and fabulous together. None of this playdate deprivation.

The Eaglestons

Monday, August 9, 2010

One of the first things I noticed about Haley when she met me at the gate of her gorgeous pink midtown home was her beautifully patterned summer dress. She told me that she'd had trouble finding the "right" thing to wear, and when the shopkeeper counseled her against buying it, explaining that "photographers don't like it," she rebelled and bought it anyway.

I love rebel mamas.

Clearly it was the perfect choice. While the weather was far from perfect, the entire Eagleston clan - Haley, Adam and three sweet pooches - played and posed and made for lovely subjects. Thanks for letting me come play!

Misti

The word rad is justthisclose to petering out of my lexicon, maybe because a woman on this side of thirty really has no business uttering things that put you in the mind of parachute pants and movies with saxophone solos, but honestly, rad is the word that comes to mind when I think of Misti Rae. Rad in that she is a modern day renaissance woman with talent to burn and a willingness to wear a zebra mask with panache.

We had a super fun day trying on clothes, posing, and generally just being up for anything. I could stare at her photos for days. I feeling you just might, too.

Bang Bang

On Friday, Harlow and I were cruising home from swim lessons. She smelled of sunscreen and chlorine. The sun threw lazy patterns across the windshield. WEVL had an excellent set going, crowned by Nancy Sinatra's Bang Bang. I was lost in the song when Harlow piped up from the back seat.

Why does her baby shoot her down?

Uh...

Does she need a bandaid?

No, sweetie. It's... not what you think. He doesn't really shoot her. He... said something that made her sad.

Why did her baby do that?

It's not that kind of baby. You know how I call Daddy, baby, too?

(silence) But he shoot her down?

I think he broke her heart.

(insistent) So she needs a bandaid.

Yes, Harlow. She definitely needs a bandaid.

Happy Friday

Fwd: Harlow

Can we vote this into law now? Please?

Mama needs sleep. And year round school. And maybe a pedicure while we're at it.

And then I listen to a Fresh Air interview with Queen guitarist turned astrophysicist Brian May, and I just feel lazy.

Harlow triumphed at her week long swim lessons, miraculously rocking a steampunk/Esther Williams bathing beauty look. I was clapping and smiling too manically to take photos. But then, the other day when she asked her daddy to play catch with her and then forbade me from joining, stating I could ONLY PHOTOGRAPH it, I realized maybe I don't have to capture her every single movement in time. Sometimes making memories in the head are just as lovely.

We're off to the lake this weekend, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend in your future.

Next week, Misti's boudoir shoot, a sweet maternity shoot, a family portrait and quite possibly some very unattractive self portraits with my computer photobooth.

See you then!

One more tease

Thursday, August 5, 2010

I'm literally running out the door for my next appointment - a boudoir session that promises to be one of the alluring yet! But I'm dying to share just one more teaser from last week's fantastic session.

I love my life.
